Alta, often referred to as the City of the Northern Lights, is renowned for its Northern Lights observatory built in the late 1800s. This magical display is something everyone should experience.

Alta consists of neighborhoods like Bossekop, Bukta, Elvebakken, Midtbakken, and Sentrum, stretching across a scenic area in Norway. Surrounded by deep valleys, towering peaks, and beautiful fjords, it makes for an ideal destination for explorers.

Activities

You can find Altafjord along with its side fjords and islands, including Stjernøya and Seiland just outside Alta. Seiland hosts Seiland National Park with the Seilandsjøkelen glacier and the Seilandstuva mountain, which are definitely worth visiting. During winter, consider trying dog sledding or joining a snowmobile safari. There's also the opportunity to ski on the snow-covered mountains outside the city. In the summer, hiking is popular, either independently or on guided tours.

Alta is best known for its numerous rock carvings and cave paintings, as well as Stone Age artifacts dating back to around 5200 BC and 9,000 years ago. These can mainly be visited at Hjemmeluft on the outskirts of Alta. This rock carving area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are also museums to visit, and guided tours to the rock carvings are available in the summer. At the museum, you can also learn more about the Northern Lights.

How to Get Here

The main access route makes the location easily reachable by car. There are also options for public transport, including buses, express boats, and ferries to the area. Alta also has its own airport.
