In June 1300, the Lord of Biscay granted the city of Bilbao the rights to trade. Since then, not much has happened—at least not in the Old Town, which is believed to lie beneath the newer Old Town. Visitors in Bilbao encounter fascinating contrasts due to centuries of architectural experiments. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is undoubtedly the most spectacular building for miles around. The museum is half the fun of visiting Bilbao—the other half might be the seafood or the shopping.

A Traditional Market Town

On Sundays, after a strong morning coffee, head to Plaza Nueva Square, transformed into a vibrant marketplace. The Old Town often represents youthful and surprising businesses, while the central parts around Gran Via offer well-known brands. Just outside the city, you can find larger shopping centers with a great selection. Shoes, hats, leather goods, chorizo, and goat cheese are among the items you might take home from Bilbao.

Rent a car and stay at a small vineyard in the Rioja district, just over an hour away.

See Bilbao from the Nervión River with a guided boat tour from the City Hall. Admire the city from the river that divides it.
