This is the story of a good-natured mountain creature that helped people and was literally destroyed by their ingratitude. It all began with a series of strange incidents that hindered the construction of the funicular railway to the summit of the Sunnegga mountain, near Zermatt. Workers repeatedly reported problems with equipment, strange sounds from the mountain, and other anomalies. The construction was suspended several times, and rumors spread among the locals about a mountain spirit awakened by the intrusion of technology into the ancient lands. The Swiss media, of course, reported this, but no one seriously believed in the mystical nature of the events. Everything changed when one of the engineers, who was on the construction site, found a strange creature in the forest. It was about the size of a large dog, covered with thick gray fur, resembling a cross between a human and a mountain goat. The creature seemed frightened and weakened. The engineer managed to lure it with food and bring it to the camp. Despite its terrifying appearance, the creature turned out to be surprisingly friendly. It willingly came into contact, ate the offered food, and even let people pet it. The creature seemed to be trying to tell people something, making sounds reminiscent of a melody. The workers, who had previously been afraid of it, gradually started treating it with sympathy, giving it the nickname “Myti” (from the word “mysterious”). Myti quickly became a kind of mascot for the workers. He followed them around the construction site, helped carry tools, and even seemed to “guard” the workers during their rest. People noted that since the creature appeared, the strange incidents—like equipment breakdowns and sudden rockfalls—stopped. It seemed that Myti was trying to maintain a balance between the mountain and human activity. But then, the “civilized” world intervened. The news of the unusual creature reached the capital, and a group of scientists and journalists arrived at the construction site. They wanted to study Myti, take biological samples, and understand where it came from. At first, they tried to act peacefully, but the creature, sensing the threat, began to resist. Scientists insisted on conducting a series of experiments, demanding that Myti be kept captive and subjected to various tests. The workers, who had managed to form an emotional attachment to the creature, tried to intervene, but they were not listened to. Pressure mounted, and in an attempt to escape, Myti ran into the machinery and was seriously injured. Despite efforts to save it, the creature died a few days later. As it died, the creature emitted a sound that, according to eyewitnesses, was more like a mournful song. After Myti’s death, the construction work on the funicular was completely disrupted. The machinery kept inexplicably breaking down, rockfalls resumed, and the workers began leaving the site. The project was eventually frozen, and the presented project was never completed. This story, which instantly spread across the Swiss and even world media, raises many questions. Is it a coincidence or a consequence of human cruelty towards a being that tried to help? Why, despite all warnings, did people continue to insist on their own? Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that we often fail to see the true value of what we do not understand. The legend of Myti at Sunnegga remains a symbol of a lost chance for harmony between man and nature. The mountain, which once attracted adventurers from all over the world, serves as a reminder that not every mystery is meant to be solved, and sometimes it is better to leave things as they are.
