Viaggio verso Montignac

Montignac is located in southwestern France. The area is best known for the Lascaux Cave (or Grotte de Lascaux II), featuring stunning cave paintings dating from 17,000 to 15,000 BC. The cave is situated in the Vézère Valley in Dordogne, about 25 km from Montignac. The Lascaux Cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the paintings depict wild horses, reindeer, stags, and steppe bison. There are also more symbolic figures and geometric patterns. The artworks are beautifully painted in deep red, rich ochre, and black.

When you arrive in Montignac, one of the first things you'll notice is the La Vézère River with its beautiful stone bridge from 1766 and houses with decorated balconies lining the river. Walking along the river and through the village is a popular activity. Along the way, there are several sites and beautiful buildings worth stopping to admire. In the central area lies Chapelle Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste, a chapel from the 13th century. Next door is the tourist office, and in the same building, you can find an exclusive craft shop.

Another interesting attraction is Couvent des Clarisses, an old convent from the 18th century with outstanding views over the river and rooftops from the top floor. Château de Montignac is a castle in the region also worth visiting. Most buildings on Rue de la Pegerie date back to the 14th century and feature fantastic timber constructions. It is said that House No. 1 on this street belonged to Jeanne d'Albret, mother of King Henri IV of France.

While strolling through the village, you can also find several charming pubs, bars, and restaurants where you can take a break, drink locally-produced wine, and enjoy local delicacies.
