Viaggio verso Potsdam

1 / 4

Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and boasts a history spanning over a thousand years. After the Thirty Years' War, Elector Friedrich Wilhelm chose Potsdam as his second residence alongside Berlin. Shortly afterward, he began building the Stadtschloss, which was destroyed during World War II and remained a powerful ruin until it was demolished in 1960.

After 1740, Friedrich, later known as "Frederick the Great," ruled and transformed Potsdam into a representative residence city. The Dutch Quarter was constructed in typical Dutch style intended as housing for Dutch craftsmen. However, fewer artisans arrived than expected, leading many houses to be used by soldiers or soldier's widows.

In 1745, the foundation stone for Sanssouci Palace was laid, and it is considered the best-preserved building from the Rococo period.

In more modern times, the city was heavily affected during the final phase of World War II. The socialist regime of East Germany took over and aimed to give the city a "representative appearance" with high-rise buildings and parade grounds, losing sight of the historical value of the past, an issue that is being addressed today.

Sanssouci Palace, which means "without worries," is a must-visit attraction today.

Cecilienhof Palace played a crucial role when the victors signed the Potsdam Agreement on August 2, 1945. This agreement would mark the beginning of post-war history for Germany and Europe. The palace was built between 1914-17 for Crown Prince Wilhelm and his wife Cecilia and is the last palace created by the Hohenzollern family. Here, the three victors each had their own entrance to prevent any disputes over precedence.

The bridge over the Havel River is known as Glienicke Bridge and serves as a direct route to the heart of Berlin. During the Cold War, it was the site of spy exchanges. The most notable exchange occurred in 1962 between American pilot Gary Powers and Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.

With its exciting location near Berlin, Potsdam is well worth a visit today. The charming architecture has been carefully restored, and there are delightful shopping streets with cozy restaurants. Indeed, there is much to see and experience.
